Each syringe contains 3. 6 grams of pyrantel base in 23. 6 grams paste. Each mL contains 180 mg pyrantel base as pyrantel pamoate. Although we discuss ‘worming’ to treat these parasites they are not technically worms like redworm or roundworm but flies. There are only specific times when treatment will be effective depending on their life stage. There is so much that can be discussed with horse worming and you will find that there are many different opinions and approaches.

Lungworm Treatment

Ivermectin and moxidectin are the most effective treatments for lungworm. Both can be used in horses but not all ivermectin based wormers or moxidectin are licenced for use in donkeys.

FECs can also be useful in identifying horses showing resistance to treatment when the sample is taken a short while after worming. Strongid P Paste Plain is for the control and treatment of adult infections of large and small strongyles, Oxyuris, Parascaris and Anoplocephala perfoliata. Strongid is effective against benzimidazole resistant strains of small strongyles. It is recommended to use a wormer that will treat encysted redworm during the winter months.

Pinworm is not a true intestinal horse worm and isn’t a pathological threat to horse health but they can be irritating and hard to get rid of. When using Strongid-P to for the treatment and control of tapeworm, a dose rate of 38mg per kg of bodyweight should be administered, that is double the dose of that for strongyles. If considered necessary, treatment for tapeworm should be carried out at intervals of at least six weeks. Ensure each animal receives a complete dose based on a current body weight.

Strongid P Paste Plain

• However infection can cause irritation, sometimes so severe that horses will rub themselves raw around their tail head; this can lead to skin infections and further problems.
• If pinworm is confirmed then one of the more old fashioned wormers like a double dose of pyrantel or a 5 day course of fenbendazole is a good choice of treatment.
• Safety precautions may be necessary during administration, please consult the packaging and/or product literature.

The Donkey Sanctuary recommends using the Eqvalan brand over generic ivermectin wormers because of treatment results they have seen in their animals. Conversely ivermectin and moxidectin are the wormers that ascarids have developed most resistance to. We would choose fenbendazole and pyrantel as the most effective treatments for these parasites. This is the reason we would always ensure these chemicals are included in a programme for young horses under the age of four.
