The Maremma has given rise to, or given its name to, several breeds of domestic animal. This is a beautiful dog, but large, so don’t make the mistake of wanting a large dog like this for his looks. He tends to drool so it’s handy keeping a damp cloth close by just to give his face area a wipe down. Your dog’s ears will need to be cleaned with special ear-cleaning lotion and his nails will also need to be trimmed. Since 1975, this area of timeless rural landscapes has been a protected area, the Parco Naturale della Maremma. But the Parco Naturale’s “one in, one out” rule helps to limit numbers, and in any case most families plonk down their beach towels within 10 minutes’ walk of the car park. Manciano, situated on the top of a hill is dominated from the Rocca, today seat of the municipality. In the Middle Ages, Grosseto was a fortified village along the road linking Pisa to Rome. In 935 the Saracen destroyed the ancient Etruscan town of Roselle, whose inhabitants fled to Grosseto Pope Innocenzo II stayed several times in Grosseto before moving there the historical episcopal see of Roselle. In 1336 Siena conquered Grosseto then in 1559 the city fell in Florence`s hands. With the Medici family, Grossetto experienced an economic and demographic boom.

It was traditionally populated by the Butteri, cattle-breeders who until recently used horses with a distinctive style of saddle. Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, the Maremma was drained during the fascist regime and re-populated with people coming from other Italian regions, notably from Veneto. Dogs used for flock protection are placed among the sheep as young puppies – no more than 40 days old – so that they bond with them; human contact is kept to the indispensable minimum. If there are already guardian dogs in the flock, the puppy imitates and learns from their behaviour. The traditional use of the Maremmano is with sheep, but the dogs can form a similar bond with cows and have been used to protect range cattle as well.
