By keeping a decent amount of fish for the size of the pond, you prevent an overload of waste and reduce the nutrients available to trigger the growth of green water algae. The sustainable way forward is to build up the ecological balance in the pond so that it naturally takes away the algae. It is part of the pond cycle

Pond Plants

Simple time how long it takes to fill the bucket from the outlet of the filter, then divide 3600 by the right time to fill the bucket and multiply by the volume of the bucket. In most ponds, a sized filter system correctly, which is maintained and installed correctly, should deal with green water easily. Some of the common mistakes which can affect the performance of a filter system, are poor flowrates, poor flow patterns, old UV bulbs and poor maintenance. I’d tried chemical treatment, albeit reluctantly, and with no success . However, UV cleared the algae away pretty quickly and after that the plants were still healthy, so there was no detrimental effect whatsoever. If you’ve been having problems others treatments won’t help, try that. Natural methods include avoiding fertilising the pond itself – nor the area around it – removing decaying matter, not over-stocking with fish and sensible planting.

The same is true for feeding – ensure that you only feed what your fish can eat in ten minutes. To ensure that your filter removes the algae, the addition of an ultraviolet clarifier is needed and in fact many filter systems come with UVs built in. The radiation from the UV lamp destroys the genetic material of any cell that passes through it, thus killing the microscopic algae and helping to win the pugilative war with green-water issues.

Pond Pumps

It may be tempting to use ordinary compost when planting into a pond, but it is full of nutrients. It is better when adding plants to the pond to use sterile aquatic compost. This type of compost is free from peat and nutrients and will reduce the nutrients entering the pond water. There is the thorny issue of fish also, and whether to introduce fish into the pond. Fish are attractive, but they excrete, which adds nutrients to the pond and feeds the algae.

More nutrients than your existing pond plants can use which stimulates algae growth. Nutrient levels can be controlled by encouraging plenty of healthy fast growing pond plants and regularly removing waste and sludge from the pond. Although green water can be treated with algicide and flocculating chemicals, these are short term solutions and can have side effects, especially if used without accompanying filtration. If green algae once die back all at, they can pollute the water and use up valuable oxygen, harming fish. Changing all the water shall give only temporary relief, and the newly added minerals could encourage the pond to go green again in a short time.

Those of you who are overstocked with the amount of you keep are destined for disaster! Fish then produce more faecal waste that forms the nutrients required for green water to occur. If you intend to have any significant number of fish a filter is essential to maintain good quality water for the fish and to ensure that the fish excreta doesn’t feed the algae. It is important to buy the right size of filter for the size and depth of the pond which is determined by volume of water, and number of fish to be stocked in the pond.

If you’re an experienced pond keeper, then you probably noticed that there was no mention of UV filters or better understood as UV clarifiers. That’s because there are several things you should consider before relying on pond UV filters to prevent green water. Pond Klear works by binding and consuming the green algae particles together, along with all the fish waste, dead leaves and organic matter that form the algae’s source of food. Pond Klear, therefore, prevents green water algae from growing. Leftover fish food decomposes in the pond and turns into waste that also fuels the growth of green water. If you notice that your fish aren’t eating all the food they are given by you, reduce the amount and feed them enough to make sure there’s nothing left behind. However, choosing the best fish to add to your pond is only half of the working job.

Obviously man-made ponds are not so simple, but a balance must be found. However, these approaches may not always be enough in themselves, as green water may happen in early spring, before the protective plants have developed new foliage. Research the amount of fish suitable for the volume of water in your pond.

The algae feed on the nutrients in the water and are a natural occurrence. Green water is not unhealthy necessarily, and clear water is not healthy always. Indeed, fish tend to have brighter colouration when kept in green water, as the pigments in the algae enter their diet and help boost the red colour in goldfish and koi. It’s sited in a fairly shady place but still gets some sun, more in spring time before leaves appear on the trees. We want to encourage frogs – last year they laid lots of spawn but it all died or disappeared in the green peasoup algae bloom. Could try a solar powered fountain and will plant some water lilies and try to find some barley straw.
