Boder Terrier

Border Terrier Breed Profile

There are no known registered breeders of Border Terrier cross breeds. Border Terriers enjoy being given a task to do, they are good diggers, can run fast, jump high and even climb. They enjoy sports such as agility, terrier trials, flyball and Earthdog trials. Earthdog Trials are specifically designed for the terriers, and involve a series of underground tunnels, where the aim is to find a rat in the maze. Border Terriers should always be walked on a lead in urban areas to prevent them chasing small animals, and to prevent them from running out in front of cars. This chasing instinct often becomes stronger as the dog gets older.

It was bred for use in fox hunting, being small enough to follow a fox underground. Once known as the Coquetdale Terrier, the modern name was adapted by 1870. Border terriers are small dogs that usually stand a little taller than 12-inches at the shoulder. It has a uniquely shaped head that gives it an otter-like appearance. It usually has a short but wiry coat available in several colors and a strong, agile body. The fur is weatherproof and repels dirt, so it stays relatively clean and only requires moderate grooming.

The breed originated in the early 18th century on the borders of Northern England and Scotland. These were bred as dogs that could “go to ground” in the pursuit of it’s quarry – foxes. In the early days there were also called the Reedwater or Coquetdale Terrier but now they are known only as the “border terrier”. Raw feeding is proven to improve skin condition, and coat health, reduced irritation, itchy flaky skin, hair loss and an increased shine of fur are beautiful side-effects of a raw natural diet.

Care & Grooming

A brush daily or even so will keep loose hairs close to the house to a minimum – but be prepared to invest in some sort of good vacuum cleaner. Tips on hand-stripping the particular coat can get obtained from particular breed of dog clubs, or you can take your dog to an experienced groomer instead.

If your current pet has a new medical emergency, or even you need reassurance on grooming, feeding or general suggestions, vetfone™ is there to assist. Border G?te will surely have issues using their skin, by allergies resulting in discomfort, to disease or even insect bites.

Occasionally, these dogs like to have a mind of their own and when they feel like this, avoid a training session. Border Terriers will alert their owners to any newcomers at the door but won’t react defensively or with aggression. This breed is people-orientated and will be friendly towards humans they don’t know.

Training: How To Train A Border Terrier

It also likes to bark, so you will need to commence early with coaching to keep it from getting away from hands. However, the screaming helps them get great watchdogs, and you will usually know when anything strange is heading on in your yard. Its reckless behavior will shield you regardless involving the danger to be able to its own living but can create it difficult to be able to walk the dog where other pups go. Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome — a seizure-like condition — could also impact a small group of BTs. The Border Terrier Team encourages all BT owners to take part in the breed health survey which in turn helps the membership get a far better picture of typically the breed’s health. Many health problems can end up being traced back in the gut, so interest to gut health is super important.

  • For example, you might be covered for £5,000 per condition and it takes you 10 years to use up that amount.
  • Generally easy-going, they have an independent nature and like to make their own decisions.
  • Can cause mischief in the way of digging up your garden or chasing smaller animals so perhaps not best to keep with cats.
  • You’ll observe a reduction within flatulence and a reduction in how much waste excreted.
  • However, the barking helps them become great watchdogs, in addition to you will often know when some thing strange is planning on in the yard.
  • Obedience training should begin as soon as your authority has been asserted.

Preventive healthcare – budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Neutering – you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. As long as your Border Terrier is well-socialised with other dogs from a young age, they should get along well with them.

Average Treatment Costs

Border Terriers can be useful guard dogs as they will bark at any passerby – man, woman, child, or animal. The Border Terrier comes from the rough, hilly, cold countryside of Northern England and Scotland, where it was used by farmers for centuries to hunt vermin. The Border Terrier’s specialty is hunting foxes and rodents, as its small narrow body can access the underground burrows and other small spaces where these animals take refuge. Border Terriers are high-energy dogs and will need a minimum of one good walk a day to ensure they stay fit and healthy, as well as stimulated. Eager to please but without losing sight of their own minds, Border Terriers are independent dogs that love to explore and take in their surroundings.
